I love this product!
User: Lee Carr, Jan 10, 2007
Pros: Great Multi for travel and syncing
Cons: -
I love this product. It's small for portability which is great when I travel and it charges my phone and sync's at the same time. I always hated the stupid wall chargers anyway. I had one for my Treo 600 and now am buying one for my 700w
Love this cable
User: Jeff Hackett, Jan 30, 2007
Pros: Works great, inexpensive, and compact
Cons: It is delicate
I have had one for several months and love it. I have had no problems with it. Works exactly as advertised. In fact, I am about to buy another one. It is delicate, so I am careful to not pull by the cord when I unplug it.
Convenient
User: Leonard Balk, Mar 8, 2007
Pros: It works
Cons: Poorly made
There is no question this is poorly made, the retractable part breaks within days. But the cable is small and I keep it in my laptop bag, it makes charging the phone easy because I do not carry the power cable with me. I always keep one with me.
Great addition
User: Janice Wright, Nov 10, 2006
Pros: Small and compact
Cons: cord can become tangled
This is a good choice for a second charger/sync. I can use this one at home with my laptop and use the original cords at the office. It is also a great price.
Must-have accessory
User: Terry Harvey, Jan 14, 2007
Pros: Light, tangle-free, way better than OEM cable, disconnects easily.
Cons: Not specific to 680
Takes way less space than the clunky OEM synch cable, this is definitely a travel essential. I can ditch the OEM cable & charger. And buy a few more for the office, home, travel case.

One issue that applies to this and all similar products is that the connector is universal and doesn't fully leverage the advances in the 680. Product description needs to be updated. The OEM cable will trickle-charge the Treo 680 from discharged to 100% from a powered USB 2.0 port (that's all I have used so far). The connector for the Treo end of the the retractable cable doesn't need the power adaptor as far as I can tell, they could make it even more compact by removing that. The 680 OEM adaptor only has 4 prongs, but this product has all 13 prongs which are apparently not required for the 680. When my battery was fully discharged though, the OEM sync/charge cable wouldn't charge it, but no problem if there was a tiny bit of charge left. This cable did recharge (in about 4 hours!), and it works fine syncing from my docking station USB port which the OEM doesn't seem to do.

With battery life as cr*ppy as the 680's this is an important issue. I'd rather not carry more batteries & chargers than I absolutely have to!
Works well
User: Matt Kilpatrick, Jan 31, 2007
Pros: Retractable and relatively inconspicuous
Cons: -
Very Good not great. Though I cant find anything specifically wrong with the cable it seems that the phone connection could be a bit tighter. Other than that, a good product for the $$.
Fantastic Cable, but does wear out
User: Ken Quick, Aug 28, 2008
Pros: Compact - saves lots of space with DC & AC adapters
Cons: Wires weak at connectors - eventually break
Ive had this unit for close to two years and love it. It just stopped working (wires frayed inside insulator at PDA connector end. I travel a lot, and use this instead of car charger, wall charger, laptop sync cable with the two small DC & AC adapters. Definitely buying another one since no one makes a similar unit which is any more rugged.
You get what you pay for
User: David Yanke, Dec 19, 2006
Pros: Compact and usable with any case or skin
Cons: wire seems somewhat thin
The title says it all. There are trade-offs to the size and the retractable feature and here it is the thickness of the cable. This is not intended for heavy use, more for occasional use.

Unlike the previous comment, the retraction seems to work flawless, although I can see possible damage if you pull to hard after reaching the end.

Overall it is what I expected when I ordered it.
Not bad....
User: chris mcelwee, Feb 17, 2007
Pros: very portable
Cons: slow charger, sometimes comes unplugged at slightest touch
This is a good product for the price. The best feature is it winds up so it is very portable.
Worked great until it stopped working
User: Brian Alano, May 15, 2007
Pros: works as advertised
Cons: wore out; prone to jamming
Either there wasn't enough stress relief at the Treo end of the cable, or I was too hard on it. In any case after 18 months of frequent use the cable open-circuited. I attempted to clip off the damaged area and re-solder it, but it appears that the strands of the cable are individually insulated, and it was beyond my ken to repair it.

I suspect it is true of most retractable cable of this design that the mechanism jams if only one end is extracted. I was always able to clear the jam, though.
works well, retractable design broke
User: betagreg x, Aug 15, 2007
works as advertised, though the retractable quality broke after 8 months of use (difficult to say how many thousand retractions). Still usable, though the portable nature has been compromised
Worked great, for a while...
User: Someone Anonymous, Aug 26, 2007
Pros: Slick design, decent craftsmanship, great idea
Cons: "paint" flaked off, connection stopped working properly
Right off I noticed the physical connection wasnt as sturdy as the stock Treo cable, but I thought nothing more of it. This thing worked great for the first month or so I had it. Shortly thereafter, though, it became increasingly difficult to get this cable to hotsync - I found myself having to hold the connector firmly in the bottom of my Treo. Well, as annoying as that was, it simply got worse and worse. No less than fifteen minutes ago, I simply gave up after about the tenth time trying to get it to work. I grabbed my old box, took out the stock cable, and snapped it in (to a satisfying "CLICK"). It worked right off.

Now, dont get me wrong, this thing worked pretty well when it was playing nice, but that only lasted so long. Im still going to keep it, as it still powers the Treo just fine (making it fantastic for keeping the Palm alive on road trips). The craftsmanship is decent at best, and I noticed the "paint" (some sort of also-black rubberized coating? I dunno) started flaking off around the edges, and is now about 30 gone.

Overall, its decent, for a while. If you want something to keep your Treo charged on a road trip, thisll do it (along with the 12VDC-USB adapter), but if thats all youre looking for, theres better products out there.
middle of the road
User: todd ,, May 5, 2007
Pros: functional and cheap
Cons: broke but rigged for extended life
Like most everyone else, mine broke within a week or so. The clicking lock part broke and I took it out. I now tie a knot in one side of the cord while it is fully extended so the cables stay out. It charges and syncs my 650 with no problems. I have owned this cable for well over 2 years and use it daily. I wouldn't worry about the cable.. it is sturdy for its size.

The spring that coils the cord back still works just fine.
Sync Cable not very rugged
User: Tim Epperson, Oct 15, 2007
Pros: convienent
Cons: not very rugged
I am on my fourth Sync and Charge Cable. Two have quit retracting and the Treo connector broke on the third one. Yes, I use it a lot! However, since the thing does retract and is portable, one would think that they would be tested for that sort of thing.
Great charger, but out of sync
User: Janet Wright, Apr 23, 2008
Pros: works well as a charger
Cons: have never gotten sync to work
Although this is a great little doodad to take with you (it takes almost no room in the laptop case) and I continuously use it to charge my Treo700p, I have never gotten it to work as a sync cable. So on long trips I still need to bring that big cumbersome cord, but for a weekend, I just move anything I may need, like travel plans, checklists, etc) to my Yahoo online folder and access it that way. I also use the wireless sync at times, but I sure wish this worked the way it was advertised.
Worked great then the sync button stopped working.
User: Nathaniel Lewis, May 26, 2009
Ive enjoyed how compact and convenient this product is but after a relatively short period of time (months) the sync button no longer works. It is certainly not worth the price.
charge no sync
User: Alan Swift, Oct 10, 2007
Dear Andrew,

I wanted to let you know the experiences I had with the Smartphone Expert’s retractable recharge/sync cable. After your recommendation I bought one of these prior to a recent trip to Southern Africa. At home it worked the one time I tried it – probably should had tried it more but I figured hey – it is a cable, what can go wrong?

Anyway I got to Africa and went to sync my unlocked 750 with no luck. It would charge OK but nothing else. I tried all the fixes to no avail and over a few days frustrated I gave up.

Just to let you know I use my laptop/Treo to down load directions to various places I go once I get there and figure out my itinerary. This time having neither backup cable nor access to a printer I had to depend on the old fashion way (hand written) Kind of sucked.

Anyway since I have been home I have tried time and time again to sync my Treo with it with no luck. I use the factory cable and it kicks right in to active sync.

The trip was not ruined but I learned a valuable lesson – never try new stuff despite recommendations - when you are far from home.

Anyway I thought you might like an alterative viewpoint on one of the products you support,

Alan Swift

Useless
User: Virgil Starkwell, Dec 8, 2006
Pros: None
Cons: Broke in 5 min.
Right out of the box, I pulled the ends and it extended. Then I tried to retract and all the wires got tangled up inside. I spent the best part of a hour trying to untangle it and fix it. I ended up just removing the retraction mechanism altogether and now use it as a plain of cable. The cable itself is VERY thin (only 1mm x 2.5mm cross section) and I don't think it will last very long before breaking or getting chewed up in a laptop bag.
Did not function
User: Alexei Budsan, Dec 29, 2006
Pros: Nice design, like the Sync button
Cons: Does not work with 650s it appears
I was excited about upgrading my sync charger to this one but when I plugged it in, my XP said there was any issue with the device. I was however able to charge but not sync it. I went back to my older charger/sync and it worked fine. I called support and they said it was not properly plugged in, I checked several times including "jiggling it" as the rep said and no sycn. Either I got a bad one or it has problems with the Treo 650.
Broke by the 3rd time I used it
User: Alex D, Dec 30, 2006
Pros: ?
Cons: Cheap plastic hastily slapped together
I should have known better the second I opened it. The glue was not even dry on the private label badge that was applied to outside. Today as I was unplugging it the plastic guide bent and went white. Just like cheap plastic used to. What a waste of money. Not happy with either treocentral purchase as both items (case) broke within days.
Charges the phone but does not synch data
User: Beto G, Jan 29, 2009
Pros: Good concept and compact.
Cons: Does not sych data.
I got this cable for a Verizon Palm Centro. It charges the phone, but it fails to connect with the computer for a synchronization of data. I did a soft reset of the phone and rebooted the PC without luck.
In the past I used a similar product from the Seido brand for a Treo 650 I used to own, and it worked great every time. I bought this cable thinking that I was saving a couple of bucks, but the results were disappointing.
I will send it back and will get the Seido brand instead.
Thank you for your time.
